How to reach Lausanne



By plane

The nearest airport is Geneva-Cointrin (www.gva.ch) Other Swiss airport are Zürich Airport (www.zurich-airport.com) and EuroAirport of Basel/Mulhouse (www.euroairport.com) located in France.

By train… (www.sbb.ch)

…from the airports: from Geneva-Cointrin it takes about 40-60 minutes. The train from Zürich Airport takes approximately 2h 30 to go to Lausanne, and from the EuroAirport roughly 3h.

The train is the best means of transportation within Switzerland.

Prices: be sure not to buy the Half-Fare ticket for which you need a special travelcard.

…from the neighbouring countries: Very good train connections exit with Austria, France (TGV), Germany (ICE), Italy (Cisalpino).

By car…

…from the airports: Car rental is available at all airports.

…from the neighbouring countries: For using the Autobahn green signs you need a vignette that you can purchase at the border. It costs CHF 40 (EUR ~27). Normal roads are indicated by blue traffic signs, do not confound them with the standard for Autobahn in the EU!

Speed limits:

  • Autobahn: 120km/h
  • Normal road: 80km/h
  • City: 50km/h


How to reach EPFL from Lausanne

By public transportation (metro, M1)

Line M1 of the TL (Transports lausannois) takes you from the centre of Lausanne (Flon) to the EPFL (direction Renens)

By car
By car, on the motorway, follow direction "Lausanne-Sud", exit "EPFL".

Car parks: parking places (paying) for visitors are available under l'Esplanade, and along the Avenue Piccard. Car parks indicated by the green "P" symbol are reserved for holders of a special card.



Useful Information

Shops
Mon., Fri. 9:00–19:00 hours.

You will find many shops in the centre of Lausanne in walking distance from the hotels (except Jeunotel which is located at the lake shore).

National Currency
You will be in the land of money, so, no problem to purchase with Credit Cards. The national currency is Swiss Franc (CHF/SFr). Rate of change: EUR 1 = CHF 1.5. In supermarkets and some shops you might also pay with Euros.

Electricity
The main supply is 220-volts, but the plug is not compatible with the Schuko plug, also known as type F or CEE 7/4 plug. Foresee an adapter.


Swiss system

However, the Swiss system is compatible with the Europlug which is used mainly for the power supply of laptops.
